Scientists and the public alike have been surprised to see nearshore blooms of cyanobacteria appearing in Lake Superior waters between the Twin Ports as the Apostle Islands. These blooms mean that all the Laurentian Great Lakes are known to support HABS, though so far the Lake Superior blooms have not evidenced toxicity. Research to date suggests that both climate warming and extreme rainfall events play a role.
